Two correctional officers and an offender were killed in an accident during a transfer from Edmonton Institution for Women, Correctional Service Canada announced Thursday evening.

CSC did not disclose when the accident occurred or provide additional details about the circumstances. The agency posted a statement to social media expressing condolences to the families, loved ones, friends and colleagues of those who died.

"Our colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty served Canadians with professionalism, dedication, and courage," CSC said. "Their commitment to public safety and to CSC's mission leaves a lasting legacy, and we will ensure their invaluable contributions to our country are never forgotten."

The deaths mark a rare tragedy within Canada's correctional system. Reporters reached out to CSC for more information about the accident but had not received a response as of Thursday afternoon.
