Van crashes into daycare west of Edmonton, gas leak detected
All children at Stony Plain's Young Champions Daycare were safely evacuated after a van drove into the building; one staff member hospitalized.

Emergency crews responded Thursday morning to Young Champions Daycare in Stony Plain, west of Edmonton, after a van crashed into the building.
Parkland RCMP and the Stony Plain fire department arrived just before 11 a.m. at the facility on 48 Street near 50 Avenue. RCMP said all children inside the daycare had already been evacuated and accounted for by staff when officers arrived.
The building was fully evacuated due to a gas leak. The Town of Stony Plain said firefighters conducted an emergency rescue operation involving one person. A daycare employee was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The man driving the van was taken into police custody and is undergoing medical examinations. Parents of children at the daycare were contacted directly and reunited with their families.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area as emergency personnel worked on scene. Road closures included 48 Street in the northbound direction between 50 and 52 avenues, with southbound traffic reduced to a single lane between 49 and 53 avenues. 50 Avenue was closed between the Public Works Building and 48 Street.
