A 38-year-old man was arrested after an attempted arson at a Westmount synagogue in the early hours of Friday morning.
Montreal Police responded to a 911 call at approximately 12:15 a.m. on Sherbrooke Street near Wood Avenue. Officers and Westmount public safety personnel quickly located and arrested a suspect nearby.
Investigators say the suspect smashed a window and attempted to ignite a fire inside the building. Firefighters extinguished the flames before significant damage occurred. Incendiary materials were recovered at the scene.
No injuries were reported, and damage to the building is described as minor. The case has been transferred to the SPVM's arson squad for further investigation.
This marks another incident targeting a Montreal Jewish institution in recent months.
