Montreal police are investigating a suspected arson at a mixed-use commercial and residential building in Villeray after a fire broke out early Saturday morning.
Calls came in around 3:50 a.m. reporting the fire at a building on Saint-Hubert Street, near Faillon Street. When officers arrived, Montreal firefighters were already battling the blaze. According to police, a suspect allegedly smashed the window of a beauty salon and set a fire inside before fleeing. Incendiary material was found at the scene.
Residents were evacuated as a precaution during the firefighting response. No one was injured in the incident. The investigation has been transferred to the Montreal police department's arson and anti-crime unit, with investigators expected to remain on scene throughout the day to examine the fire and determine exact circumstances.
