Charles-LeMoyne Hospital expansion greenlights $672M South Shore infrastructure upgrade

Quebec has approved a $672 million expansion of Charles-LeMoyne Hospital in Longueuil, marking a major infrastructure investment for the South Shore. The project includes $28 million in federal funding and will address decades of deferred maintenance at the facility, which opened in 1965.

The expansion adds six storeys above the current emergency room, along with a new pharmacy, intensive care unit, and equipment for respiratory therapy and instrument disinfection. A key addition is a PET scanner—imaging equipment that can detect cancers, heart disease, and brain disorders, potentially eliminating the need for South Shore patients to travel to the Island of Montréal for diagnostic scans.

During renovations, the emergency room will temporarily relocate to a nearby clinic. Construction is set to begin soon, with full completion expected in 2032. The project is projected to create approximately 200 construction jobs.

Premier Christine Fréchette acknowledged the hospital's condition during a Wednesday announcement. "The current hospital needs some love, a lot of love," she said, noting that some pavilions are in very poor condition and the facility lacks space for the region's growing population.
