Highway 25 toward the South Shore closes for a long weekend starting Friday, October 9 at 11 p.m., affecting the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel. Workers will replace fire protection panels at the tunnel entrance that were damaged by incidents and fender-benders over the past year.

Southbound traffic between the Anjou interchange and Île Charron will be completely blocked from Friday 11 p.m. through Sunday 11 p.m., then again from Sunday 11 p.m. to Tuesday 5 a.m. between exit 4 (downtown Montreal, Jacques-Cartier Bridge) and Île Charron. Northbound lanes close Friday 11 p.m. to Saturday 8 a.m.

Ramps from Highway 40 westbound and eastbound to Highway 25 southbound will also be closed. Avenue Souligny eastbound between Dickson and Honoré-Beaugrand streets closes 30 minutes before the tunnel closure, and Stinson Street entry to Highway 40 westbound closes Saturday 2 a.m. through Sunday 11 p.m. Route 132 eastbound between Roland-Therrien Boulevard and Highway 20 closes the night of October 8–9 for maintenance and winterization work.

Significant congestion is expected. The province recommends using the Champlain Bridge for detours Friday through October 9–11, and the Jacques-Cartier Bridge from Sunday 11 p.m. onward. Police will be present to help manage traffic. Public transit is recommended as the best way to travel downtown this weekend; anyone driving should allow extra time to reach their destination.

The second South Shore lane is expected to reopen by the end of fall 2026. This is the third major closure of the tunnel in recent months—the highway shut down in July and again in mid-September for other repairs.
