A 72-year-old Montreal lawyer has been arrested in connection with a woman's death in Saint-Michel on Monday, police confirmed. Daniel Rochefort is expected to appear in court August 23, according to research materials.

Officers were called to a home on 39th Street near Paul-Corbeil Street around 2:25 p.m. Monday and found a woman in her 40s and a man in his 30s, both seriously injured by what appeared to be a sharp object. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene; the man was taken to hospital.

Montreal police confirmed the victim and suspect were in a relationship. A judge has denied bail for Rochefort, according to available court records.

The death marks the 13th suspected femicide in Montreal this year, adding to a crisis that has seen shelters turning away nearly half of women seeking help.
