Montreal is facing a double weather threat Saturday evening: severe thunderstorms and hazardous air from wildfires burning across Quebec and Ontario.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and a Special Air Quality Statement for the city. Forecasters say atmospheric conditions favour the development of severe storms early this evening, with wind gusts potentially reaching 90 km/h and localized rainfall up to 50 millimetres. Flash flooding, downed tree branches, and isolated power outages are possible. Boaters are also being warned that sudden, powerful wind gusts could make conditions hazardous on lakes and rivers.
Smoke from more than 160 active fires in Quebec—the vast majority in the northern zone above the 50th parallel—is degrading air quality in Montreal. According to IQAir, the city is currently among the Top 10 most polluted cities in the world, with air quality rated "unhealthy for sensitive groups." Environment Canada advises limiting time outdoors and reducing or rescheduling outdoor activities and events. When indoors, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.
People over 65, pregnant women, young children, people with chronic health conditions, and those who work outdoors are most at risk. Symptoms can include nose, eye and throat irritation, headaches, wheezing, chest pains, or a severe cough.
The unsettled weather is expected to move out overnight as winds shift to the northwest, helping to clear both the storms and much of the lingering smoke. Sunday will bring clearing skies with a high of 24°C and breezy northwest winds gusting to 40 km/h. Sunny and pleasant conditions are forecast for Monday with a high near 26°C. Rain chances return by Tuesday with a 60 per cent chance of showers.
