Quebec health authorities have warned the public not to consume pastries made by Boulangerie Pâtisserie La Belle Bleue inc. due to possible contamination with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

All varieties of the bakery's trompe-l'œil pastries sold until August 14 are affected. The products were distributed through the bakery's main location at 1865 rue Jean-Talon Est in Montreal, as well as five other retail outlets across the province: Pâtisserie et café Mont Rose in Granby, Beloeil, and Saint-Hyacinthe; Tout est là tout est frais in Drummondville; and the bakery itself. The pastries were kept refrigerated and handed over by staff when ordered.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Pêcheries and Alimentation (MAPAQ), in collaboration with Montreal's food inspection division and the bakery, issued the alert as a precautionary measure. The company is conducting a full recall.

Staphylococcus aureus does not always show visible signs of spoilage or unusual smell, but it can cause foodborne illness. Symptoms include sudden nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramping, and diarrhea, typically appearing 30 minutes to 8 hours after eating contaminated food and usually clearing within 24 hours. Complaints linked to these products have already been reported to MAPAQ.

If you have one of these pastries in your possession, do not consume it. Anyone experiencing symptoms after eating these products should consult a healthcare professional. Consumers with questions can email smsaia@mapaq.gouv.qc.ca.
