Quebec government engineers are escalating their strike to become general and indefinite starting July 6, significantly expanding current limited action.
The Professional Association of Quebec Government Engineers (APIGQ) represents approximately 1,900 engineers employed by the Quebec government, primarily at the Ministry of Transport, but also at the ministries of Municipal Affairs, the Environment, Natural Resources, and Cybersecurity. Currently, engineers strike every Thursday, evenings, and weekends.
Their collective bargaining agreement expired on March 31, 2023, alongside those of other public and parapublic sector employees. The dispute centers on allocation of a "sector-specific budget" that would allow salary increases exceeding the 17.4 per cent over five years granted to all government employees.
The APIGQ argues that engineers—who plan and supervise construction projects—should be considered a priority category and eligible for this additional funding. The organization believes this recognition reflects the province's infrastructure crisis and the engineers' critical role in managing it.
