Quebec's government engineers launched an indefinite general strike Monday morning after months of escalating job action. The 1,900 members of the professional association of government engineers of Quebec (APIGQ) have walked out over a dispute surrounding sector-specific budget allocation intended to provide targeted benefits to certain job categories deemed a priority.

The engineers primarily work at the Ministry of Transport, but also staff the ministries of Natural Resources, the Environment, Municipal Affairs, and Cybersecurity. Essential services remain operational during the strike, but construction sites across the province will face inevitable delays.

The union has been escalating pressure since earlier this year, conducting strikes every Thursday as well as evening and weekend job actions. The Quebec government has countered by offering engineers the same terms it granted other government employees—a 17.4 per cent salary increase over five years—but has not moved on the sector-specific budget the union is demanding.
