Quebec's 1,900 government engineers will launch an indefinite strike starting June 11, walking out every Thursday plus all evenings, nights, and weekends.

The engineers — members of the Professional Association of Engineers of the Government of Quebec — work mostly at the Ministry of Transport but also at Environment, Natural Resources, Municipal Affairs, and Cybersecurity. Their collective agreement expired in March 2023.

Union president Marc-André Martin warned the strike will devastate summer construction schedules. "When you pour concrete in the summer, you have to do it at night to prevent overheating," he said. "We're also going to have a big impact because there will be one less day. Engineers don't have enough hours in a day to complete all the deliverables we have to submit for the summer."

The group already held a one-day strike on May 20. With this new action, every major infrastructure project across Montreal and the province's urban sectors faces delays. The union has a mandate for a general, unlimited strike.

Construction crews and residents should expect noticeable slowdowns on summer projects citywide.
