Railway worker killed by train near Jacques-Cartier Bridge in Montreal

A railway worker was fatally struck by a train early Saturday morning in Montreal near the intersection of Notre-Dame Street and De Lorimier Avenue, close to the Jacques-Cartier Bridge.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 3:00 a.m. The worker was on the tracks when the train began moving, according to initial reports. "According to initial reports, it appears to be a railway employee who was working on the tracks when a train started moving," Montreal Police Service Constable Manuel Couture said. "The Collision Investigation Unit is trying to determine the circumstances surrounding this event."

The victim's identity has not been released. The SPVM is leading the investigation, with the Collision Investigation Unit examining how the train came into motion while the worker was on the tracks. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is deploying a team of investigators, and the port authority — which controls the territory where the collision occurred — is also involved.

"Out of respect for the family and to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigations, we will not comment on the circumstances surrounding the incident," said Evelyne Déry, Port of Montreal spokesperson.

The workplace safety authority CNESST may conduct its own investigation given this is a work accident. The TSB's involvement follows recommendations made after a 2023 Montreal collision between a commuter rail train and a Canadian National Railway freight train that injured six people.
