Up to 30 STM bus routes will be rerouted when the UCI Road World Championships take over Montreal, marking the first time the transit authority has had to manage an eight-day sporting event rather than a typical weekend closure.
Alexandre Fernandez, the STM's chief bus dispatcher, said the extended duration creates a different operational challenge. "We're used to events in the weekend, this time it's eight days. We're going to have to adjust depending on the days," he said.
The STM has been preparing for over three months, coordinating with the City of Montreal, police, and event organizers on which roads will close and when. The operations centre will monitor the transit network throughout the competition and respond to unexpected issues including accidents and roadblocks.
Riders should check the STM's dedicated event webpage and scan QR codes posted around affected areas for updated route information. The transit authority recommends leaving extra time for trips and considering combining bus and metro service where possible.
