Ins Choi brings Son of a Preacherman to NAC's Azrieli Studio, Sept. 16–26

Ins Choi, the playwright and performer who created the beloved television series Kim's Convenience, returns to the stage with Son of a Preacherman, a solo show exploring faith, family, and his unlikely path to theatre. The production runs through September 26 at the National Arts Centre's Azrieli Studio.

Choi comes from a long line of clergy. Before his birth, his mother made an offering to God that if she had a son, he would dedicate his life to the church. Turns out both God and Ins had other plans. The show riffs on Bible stories, his creative process, and what it meant to grow up as the only son of the head pastor at a Korean church. Through musical storytelling, Choi shares how he built a career in the arts, won over his parents, and became the representation he longed to see as a child.

The production, designed by Jessica Oostergo with lighting by Jonathan Kim, sits at the intersection of faith and art—a whimsical, funny, and heartfelt tribute from a Canadian theatre icon to his father, his passion, and Korean-Canadian communities. Intermission Magazine called it "part storytelling event, part stand-up comedy, part concert… it invites the audience to lean in and hear every word and parable uttered."

Shows run approximately 75 minutes with no intermission. Performances are at 8 p.m. most evenings, with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 26. An ASL-interpreted performance is scheduled for Friday, September 25. The production is recommended for ages 10 and up. Tickets are available through the NAC box office at 1 Elgin Street.
