Lalande Conservation Park is reopening in phases after the coyote family that forced closure earlier this month has dispersed, the city announced Saturday.

The paved pathway through the park between Plainridge Crescent and Nantes Street reopened on Friday, June 26. Barricades will remain blocking access to the rest of the park until the full reopening on Saturday, July 4, pending any new coyote activity.

Since the closure, the city and Coyote Watch Canada monitored the den site and used deterrent methods to discourage the coyotes from staying comfortable around humans. As the pups became more mobile, they dispersed and are less tied to the park. Staff decommissioned the den on Wednesday, June 24 after confirming it was no longer being used.

Coyote sightings are likely in the area going forward, as it remains within their urban territory — but the animals now display normal avoidance of humans and are expected to continue doing so. The city reminds residents to keep pets leashed in the park, supervise children around wildlife, and report any concerning coyote behaviour to 3-1-1 or by calling 9-1-1 if there is an immediate threat.
