Firefighters spent hours battling a two-alarm fire in Manotick Thursday evening that destroyed a home on Bravar Drive.

Ottawa Fire Chief Paul Hutt said crews arrived around 5:50 p.m. to find the first floor of the two-storey house engulfed in flames. Because heavy flame conditions made entry impossible, crews attacked the fire from outside.

"The entire first level was engulfed in flames," Hutt said.

Minutes after the first team arrived, a second alarm was called to bring in additional resources. The decision came because this section of the city has no fire hydrants and officials feared the fire could spread to neighbouring homes. The fire was brought under control by 8:52 p.m. after a challenging several-hour effort.

Hutt said parts of the home remained standing, but extra equipment was brought in late Thursday to make the property safe and prevent debris from falling onto the adjacent property. The home is considered a total loss. One person was home at the time. A fire investigator was dispatched to determine the cause.
