A slow-moving low-pressure system is bringing heavy rainfall and isolated thunderstorms to Ottawa overnight, with Environment Canada warning that about 50 millimetres of rain is possible.
The weather agency described the incoming storm as "moisture-laden," noting that "the high moisture associated with this low will lead to the potential for locally heavy rainfall." Residents should expect water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas.
The timing comes after a relatively dry stretch following intense spring snowmelt and river flooding that affected hundreds of homes across the Ottawa-Gatineau region earlier this year. By late April, water levels had stabilized after the April deluge impacted more than 486 buildings, with 12 families voluntarily evacuating and 109 receiving Red Cross assistance.
Thursday remains hot and humid with a high of 28 C and a humidex near 38 before conditions ease slightly by Friday evening.
