A Facebook Marketplace transaction turned violent Monday morning when a buyer attempted to rob a seller outside a bank in Manotick.
At around 10:30 a.m., the seller was meeting the prospective buyer outside the CIBC bank in the 1100 block of Beaverwood Road when the buyer — a young offender — pulled a gun and tried to rob them. Two shots were fired during the confrontation, and no one was struck.
Three people intervened: a security guard, the victim, and an off-duty police officer. Together they took the suspect into custody. The young offender sustained minor injuries during the arrest and was taken to CHEO.
Ottawa police recovered a firearm at the scene. The investigation is continuing, and anyone with information is asked to contact police. The charges against the suspect have not been disclosed. The incident marks the continuation of safety concerns around online buy-and-sell transactions; as HOC reported in June, fake-money scams have also targeted Ottawa marketplace users.
