The City of Ottawa is waiving its three-item garbage limit for residents in three west-end wards starting July 8 as the city recovers from the record-breaking Canada Day storm.

Bay, College, and Knoxdale-Merivale residents can now dispose of storm debris with no item limits. As part of the city's Special Collection operation, residents in these wards can also put out two items of construction waste bins starting Monday.

Public Works general manager Alain Gonthier said in a memo that the city has received over 3,200 reports of flooded basements across Ottawa. The West End, including Nepean, experienced the heaviest concentrated rainfall and localized flooding. As of Friday, Hydro Ottawa crews were still managing power outages in Bay, College, and Kitchissippi wards, with other areas including Knoxdale-Merivale also affected.

Once the initial collection round is complete, the Special Collection operation will continue collecting storm debris throughout the city based on service requests received by calling 3-1-1. City staff noted that collection of storm-related debris may take many weeks.
