Ottawa police conducted a targeted traffic-enforcement blitz October 16-17 in the city's south end, stopping more than 40 vehicles and laying 41 provincial offence notices in Barrhaven, Findlay Creek, Riverside South, and at high-traffic intersections along the Hunt Club corridor.

Four vehicles were searched due to concerns over cannabis and alcohol infractions.

Beyond the charges, officers used the stops as teaching moments. "Officers took the opportunity to speak directly with drivers and passengers about safe driving practices, the consequences of unsafe behaviour behind the wheel, and the shared responsibility everyone has in keeping Ottawa's roads safe," Ottawa Police Service said in a statement.

The blitz came against a grim backdrop: Ottawa has recorded 30 traffic fatalities so far this year—well over last year's total of 22. Police reminded all road users to "remain attentive, obey traffic laws and make safe choices every time they travel."

Charges laid included distracted driving and hand-held device use, driving with cannabis or liquor readily available, obstructed licence plates, disobeying stop signs, improperly coloured or coated windows and windshields, driving without a valid permit, and failing to surrender proof of insurance.

HighOnCity reported in September that Ottawa police conducted a similar traffic-enforcement operation in the city.
