A commercial vehicle safety blitz in Ottawa's west end on Oct. 22 inspected 87 commercial vehicles and pulled 20 of them out of service for safety problems, police said.

The Ontario Provincial Police, Ottawa Police Service and the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario took part, with 16 inspectors qualified by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. Out-of-service defects included defective brakes, improper tires, insecure loads, damaged suspension components, steering defects and missing or defective trailer safety devices. Inspectors laid 68 charges, covering things like expired annual inspection stickers, overweight vehicles, improper tires and missing licence plates. One licence plate was seized after a vehicle was deemed unfit.

The agencies said they will keep working together on targeted enforcement to help keep Ottawa's roads safe. The release does not say whether the 20 out-of-service vehicles are the same ones that received charges.

HighOnCity reported similar blitzes in July, when trucks were pulled off the road in west Ottawa, and in September, when vehicles were pulled in the south end.
