Nineteen trucks were removed from roads in Ottawa's south end on September 15 after a joint safety blitz by the Ottawa Police Service and Ministry of Transportation of Ontario.
Inspectors checked 71 commercial vehicles and found serious defects: defective brakes, improper tires, inoperative brake lamps, damaged suspensions including cracked leaf springs, damaged bearings, improper safety chains, and load security problems. One trailer had its plates removed entirely due to being unfit for service.
Thirty drivers were charged. Violations included Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration breaches, permit violations, missing inspection reports, improper driver's licenses, load security infractions, overweight vehicles, major defects, and missing annual inspection certificates.
The agencies said they "will continue to conduct targeted enforcement initiatives to help keep Ottawa's roads safe."
