Ottawa Fire Services contained two residential fires in Greely on back-to-back days, preventing either from spreading beyond the homes where they started.
The first call came in at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday in the 500 block of Shoreway Drive. Crews found smoke and flames coming from a single-family home, with large flames visible from the basement window. An air-conditioning unit that had fallen from its brackets was engulfed in fire. Firefighters searched the home and found no one inside. They extinguished the fire approximately 40 minutes after arriving, containing it to the basement office and computer room. Sections of the home were opened to allow crews to reach hot spots, and high-pressure fans removed lingering smoke.
The second fire occurred at 7:14 a.m. Monday in the 1200 block of South Beach Boulevard. Smoke was reported from the garage and home vents. Inside the garage, crews found a vehicle, fuel containers, and a barbecue. All six residents at the address were evacuated safely, along with their pets. Firefighters contained the flames to the garage only.
An Ottawa fire investigator was dispatched to both scenes to determine the cause and origin of each fire. The investigator's findings have not yet been released.
