BC NDP falls one seat short of full candidate slate for snap provincial election

The BC NDP fell one seat short of fielding a complete slate for the provincial election it called, leaving Peace River North without an NDP candidate on the ballot.
Candidate nominations closed at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday, October 3. The BC NDP paperwork for Peace River North was incomplete before the Elections BC filing deadline, according to Cheryl Oates, the party's campaign director. The riding will now appear on the ballot with Conservative candidate Curtis Whitford and independent Jordan Kealy.
The NDP called the snap election on September 22. It had run candidates in all 93 ridings in the 2024 provincial general election and in all 87 ridings in 2020.
In Peace River North in 2024, BC NDP candidate Ian McMahon received 828 votes, compared to Conservative Jordan Kealy's 11,213 votes and independent Don Davies's 3,038 votes. McMahon will not be on the ballot this time.

The BC NDP's candidate slate is 60 per cent women and includes 38 candidates who are Indigenous or from visible minority communities; 23 have previously been elected to municipal government.
Four cabinet ministers have announced they will not seek re-election: Ravi Kahlon, Kelly Greene, Lana Popham, and Brenda Bailey. Across the election, 355 candidates are running representing ten political parties, plus 15 running as independent or unaffiliated.
