Alberta's byelection calendar just got busier. Premier Danielle Smith has called a vote in Calgary-Shaw for Sept. 14, filling a seat left vacant in May when former environment minister Rebecca Schulz resigned.
Schulz, who served in Smith's cabinet until the end of 2025, has since become an executive with Whitecap Resources, a major oil and gas producer.
Three parties are competing for the riding. Smith's UCP has nominated Mike Derry, described by the premier as community-minded and focused on keeping taxes low and growing the economy. The Opposition NDP is running Kyle Campbell, with Leader Naheed Nenshi saying the vote is a chance for Calgarians to reject a government "that caters to separatists." The newly formed Progressive Tory Party, led by former UCP cabinet minister Peter Guthrie, is also fielding a candidate.
The riding has voted conservative consistently since its creation in 1986, with one exception: the 2015 NDP wave that brought Rachel Notley to power. Smith had signalled she would wait until summer passed before calling the byelection, saying Albertans typically tune out politics during warm months. Elections Alberta will release unofficial results after polls close on voting day.
