Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced three byelections for Monday, August 31, including one in the Vancouver-area riding of North Vancouver—Capilano.

The North Vancouver—Capilano seat was held by Liberal Jonathan Wilkinson, who was named Canada's ambassador to the European Union in the spring. The riding will be contested by Braeden Caley, Carney's former deputy chief of staff, who is seeking the Liberal nomination. Caley, from Richmond, has worked behind the scenes for the Liberals for about two decades and was unopposed for the candidacy.

Also running are Stephen Curran, a business lawyer with the Conservative Party of Canada who ran against Wilkinson in the last federal election, and Shelley Luce, the Green Party of Canada candidate.

The other two byelections are in Beaches—East York in Ontario, vacated by Liberal Nate Erskine-Smith after a decade representing the riding, and Chicoutimi—Le Fjord in Quebec, where Conservative MP Richard Martel stepped down after his appointment to the Senate.

Elections Canada said early voting is open now through its offices. Advance voting will be available August 21 to 24 at assigned polling stations before election day on August 31.
