Braeden Caley, a longtime Liberal political aide, has won the federal byelection in North Vancouver-Capilano, giving the Liberals their third victory in Monday night's round of byelections and ensuring they keep their majority government.

The riding was considered a safe Liberal seat. Jonathan Wilkinson, the former cabinet minister who held it, won for a fourth time last year with almost 60 per cent of the vote — the party's best result in recent decades. Wilkinson resigned as MP in June to become Canada's ambassador to the European Union.

Caley, who hails from B.C., stepped away from his role as deputy chief of staff to Prime Minister Mark Carney to launch his campaign for the seat. He held a string of positions with the party over his career.

According to Elections Canada results reported late Monday, Caley received 8,535 votes — double those of his closest rival, Conservative Stephen Curran. The Conservatives won the riding in 2011.

The Liberals won all three byelections contested Monday night — North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia, Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec, and Beaches-East York in Ontario. Six other byelections are expected in the coming months.
