Canadians receiving the Canada Disability Benefit will get a one-time $150 lump-sum payment on Thursday, September 17, the same day regular monthly disability payments are issued.
The supplement, announced this week by Employment and Social Development Canada, is intended to help offset the cost of obtaining a disability tax credit, including medical certificates that some practitioners charge $125 to $150 to complete. The Canada Disability Benefit itself provides regular monthly payments to low-income, working-age Canadians with disabilities who hold a disability tax credit certificate.
Eligibility for the $150 payment applies retroactively. Anyone who received disability benefit payments between July 2025 and June 2026 qualifies, as do those whose monthly benefit payment is $20 or less, and those who receive their benefit as a lump-sum covering an entire payment period. If approved for a new disability tax credit certificate and only started receiving benefits in July 2026, the supplemental payment will arrive in winter 2027.
Recipients will receive the payment via their registered method — either direct deposit or mailed cheque. The payment is not something Canadians can apply for separately; it arrives automatically for those who meet eligibility criteria. According to ESDC, the benefit has supported hundreds of thousands of working-age Canadians with disabilities since its launch last year.
