Quebec's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food warned the public on October 14 not to consume spaghetti sauce sold by Produits Marjolyze due to the risk of Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which can produce a fatal toxin.

The recalled product — sold in 500 ml and 1 L glass jars with metal lids — was distributed in the Estrie region, with particular emphasis on retirement homes, until October 14. The sauce was stored at room temperature. The product was not prepared and packaged to ensure safety, the ministry said.

Botulism toxin can cause facial paralysis, fixed pupils, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, and vision and speech disturbance. Severe cases can be fatal. Importantly, the product may show no visible signs of spoilage or suspicious odor, making it impossible to identify by sight or smell.

The manufacturer is recalling the product as a precautionary measure agreed with the Ministry. No illnesses have been reported to the Ministry to date. The recall is classified as class 1, the highest risk category.

If you have this product in your home, do not consume it. If you have eaten it and develop any symptoms, consult a healthcare professional immediately.
