Environment Canada issued a red-level tornado warning Thursday evening for southwestern Ontario as a severe thunderstorm moved through the region.

Meteorologers were tracking a storm possibly producing a tornado in the Glencoe area, southwest of London. The warning, issued shortly after 6 p.m. on June 25, covered Wardsville, Glencoe, Melbourne, Dutton, and John E. Pearce Provincial Park as the storm moved east at 40 km/h.

Red warnings are rare and reserved for "very dangerous and possibly life-threatening weather" that could cause "extreme damage and disruption," according to Environment Canada's colour-coding system. The agency warned of damaging winds, large hail, and locally intense rainfall.

"This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation," the warning stated. Residents were urged to take cover immediately in a basement, interior room, or sturdy shelter. A large swath of Southern Ontario remained under yellow watch for severe thunderstorms.
