Unifor has reached a tentative agreement with General Motors covering more than 4,600 unionized employees across four manufacturing and parts facilities in Canada.

Union president Lana Payne said the deal includes strong income and benefit gains. Jack Uppal, president and managing director at GM Canada, said it builds on the company's investments in Canadian manufacturing, though further details will be shared after ratification.

The agreement follows Unifor's recently concluded deal with Ford, which established the pattern for discussions with other automakers. The Ford agreement secured a 3% annual wage increase along with additional bonuses and cost of living allowances for represented employees.

The tentative GM deal covers workers at the Oshawa Assembly Plant, CAMI Assembly Plant in Ingersoll, St. Catharines Propulsion Plant, and Woodstock Parts Distribution Centre. Unifor's top bargainer says the tentative terms are in line with the pattern set by Ford.

Ratification votes are scheduled for August 29 and 30. Unifor plans to move next into talks with Stellantis as the auto sector faces headwinds including U.S. tariffs, the Trump administration's decision not to extend the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, and competition from Chinese electric vehicles entering the Canadian market.
