Dacasto, the Italian baking business that's spent 25 years perfecting panetonne and pastries in Toronto, just launched a sandwich shop.

La Baciata opened the first week of June at what was formerly Dacasto's Midtown location near Yonge and Eglinton. The name comes from the Italian word for "kissed," referring to the 48-hour fermented focaccia that's baked folded so both sides are, in a manner of speaking, kissing each other.

Dacasto, which was founded in Alba, Italy, built its Toronto reputation starting near Yonge and Eglinton, then later opened a pastry-forward sister spot on King East serving cannoli, panettone, tiramisu, and other dolci.

The shift to savoury is a calculated move. The focaccia is filled with imported Italian ingredients—chicken parmesan, caprese, mortadella with straciatella and pistachio—yielding a considerable menu. Hot meals like meatballs, chicken and veal parmesan sit alongside salads and, of course, desserts.

La Baciata is located at 2393 Yonge St.
