Peak tomato season has arrived in Toronto, and Grape Witches—the west-end wine shop—is throwing a full patio celebration to mark it.
On August 2 from 2 to 7 p.m., the shop partners with local distributor Broadfork Produce to host an event devoted entirely to the fruit. The menu pairs heirloom tomatoes in every variety, colour, and size with wine selections curated specifically to complement the umami-rich produce.
Robinson Bread, the Parkdale bagel shop, is bringing a four-foot-long baguette sandwich stacked with heirloom tomatoes tossed in sherry-and-honey gastrique, Monforte Dairy's pressed fresh mozzarella, and a drizzle of dill oil. Honey's, the vegan ice cream shop, will serve a Sungold tomato, basil, and olive oil sorbet—a plant-based frozen treat designed around the season's star ingredient.
Other limited-edition collaborations include fermented soya tomatoes with mushrooms, pickled green tomato salad, and grape-and-tomato panzanella. The by-the-glass wine list will be built around the tomato dishes, offering pairings that highlight the fruit's complexity.
