One of North America's largest acai bowl chains is landing in Toronto this week. Playa Bowls, the California-based smoothie and bowl business, opens its first Canadian location Thursday, June 18, at The Well on King West at 8 a.m.
Founded 12 years ago by two surfers on the Jersey Shore, Playa Bowls has expanded to more than 100 locations across 20 U.S. states. The chain specializes in acai bowls — blended frozen acai topped with fresh fruit — plus oatmeal, traditional smoothies, coffee drinks, and fresh and cold-pressed juices in tropical flavours.
The Well, already home to U.S. chains like Prince Street Pizza and Crumbl, sits in an optimal spot to attract health-conscious customers from nearby Sweat and Tonic and REFORMD fitness studios.
For opening day, the first 100 people in line will receive a free bowl. The chain described itself as founded on "two surfers, one blender and a whole lot of beach town love."
Toronto's acai bowl market is already well-stocked — smoothie shops and dedicated bowl businesses are scattered across the city — but Playa Bowls brings both scale and brand recognition to the local scene.
