A burger battle is brewing at one of Toronto's busiest intersections as two high-profile chains prepare to set up shop within metres of one another.
Shake Shack is slated to open at the heritage Albert Bricknell Bookshop building at 765 Yonge St. this fall, while McDonald's is moving into the heritage William Hewett Building at 826 Yonge St. — just across the street.
The competition marks a significant moment for Shake Shack, which has been on a rapid expansion across the GTA. The chain has grown to eight locations across the region in less than 24 months, even as McDonald's has maintained its presence in the city for nearly 60 years. No exact opening dates have been announced yet, though signage at the new McDonald's location indicates "coming soon" for both.
The Yonge and Bloor location is a major corridor, home to the TTC subway intersection and a steady stream of commuters and shoppers. Whether both chains can thrive in such close proximity, or if one will ultimately dominate the block,.
