Two years after Toronto cook Vei Chong's Malaysian Hokkien Mee micro noodle shop vanished from the city's food scene, Tapow Toronto is back — this time on the patio of Bar Dystopia in Parkdale.

Chong first opened Tapow Toronto at the back of Dipped Donuts in Kensington Market in 2024, serving heaping plates of his single signature dish: Malaysian Hokkien Mee, a noodle plate perfected over years working at street food and fine dining spots in Singapore, Malaysia, Montreal, and Toronto. The partnership lasted just one month before Chong had to find a new home. For nearly two years he ran occasional pop-ups at U of T frosh events and out of Baldwin Village's Tiger Den.

Now Chong has landed a more stable setup. Tapow Toronto is open Thursday through Saturday on Bar Dystopia's patio at 1704 Queen St. W. On Saturdays, from 1 to 6 p.m., he also does takeout. Chong remains the sole operator — taking orders, cooking, and handling the business side.

The menu stays focused: exclusively one thing, done really well. His hot, savoury Hokkien Mee remains the star.
