Zellers is bringing back its iconic diner — at least temporarily — to celebrate the opening of its first new Toronto location in years.

The Zellers Diner on Wheels will operate from Thursday, June 18, through Sunday, June 21, at the new Zellers store at 80 Orfis Rd., serving classic menu items that defined the in-store restaurant experience for generations of Canadians.

The diner operated in Zellers stores starting in the 1960s under different names — The Skillet or the Zellers Family Restaurant — and became synonymous with affordable comfort food during shopping trips. The signature menu included the Big Z Burger, club sandwiches, onion rings, milkshakes, and hot gravy chicken sandwiches. When the chain closed its last store in 2020, those diners vanished with it.

For this celebration, the mobile diner will serve Big Z Burgers, hot gravy chicken sandwiches, chicken fingers, grilled cheese, and fries with gravy. Hours run 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The venue will also feature a 25-foot inflatable Zelly Bear, Zellers' mascot, along with kiddie rides and giveaways. The diner is expected to appear at future Zellers openings across Ontario.
