Zellers is returning to Shoppers World in Brampton after a 14-year absence, marking another step in the retailer's comeback across Canada.
The new location will occupy space at 499 Main St. S. in a central mall position, right across from guest services, replacing a now-closed Ardenes store. The original Zellers at Shoppers World opened in 1998, replacing a Kmart, and operated for 14 years before Hudson's Bay Company wound down the chain in 2012 to make way for Target's Canadian expansion. Target never opened at the Shoppers World location, and the space sat vacant after Zellers closed.
Les Ailes de la Mode Inc., the current owner of Zellers, is calling its latest expansion strategy "Zellers 3.0" — smaller-format stores deliberately sized down from the 1990s originals. The new Brampton location will be notably smaller than the original Shoppers World space, though the exact square footage has not been disclosed. A site plan showing the space marked "coming soon" was shared on property owner RioCan's website.
Only three Zellers stores are currently operating in Canada, with one active location in Toronto. The Brampton opening is part of a broader expansion that included new locations across the country. No opening date has been confirmed for the Brampton location.
