The Wallflowers celebrate 30 years of Bringing Down the Horse at sold-out Danforth show

The Wallflowers performed their 1996 breakthrough album Bringing Down the Horse in its complete sequence at a sold-out Danforth Music Hall on Friday, August 21, marking the record's 30th anniversary with a two-part concert that paid homage to the late Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

The set included the album's defining hits: "One Headlight," "6th Avenue Heartache," "The Difference," and "Three Marlenas," along with album tracks "Bleeders," "Invisible City," "Josephine," and closer "I Wish I Felt Nothing." Front man Jakob Dylan addressed the crowd early in the show, explaining the evening's structure: "We don't normally open up with 'One Headlight,' and then go right into '6th Avenue Heartache,' but as you know we're playing Bringing Down the Horse in its whole sequence—and this is what happened next."

After completing the album, The Wallflowers pivoted to perform nine songs from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' 1982 album Long After Dark in its entirety. Dylan spoke about his history with Petty and his admiration for the late rocker, whom he inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Dylan recalled spending time with Petty's family in 1986 and opening for the Heartbreakers during their 1997 Fillmore residency in San Francisco and again in 2001.

The album's Canadian legacy runs deep. Brought Down the Horse received a triple-platinum certification in Canada in 1997, then went 4x platinum, eventually reaching 6x platinum status in 1998. The Wallflowers were massive enough to headline the 16,000-capacity Molson Amphitheatre (now RBC Amphitheatre) in that era.

Dylan remains the band's sole original member. The current lineup—multi-instrumentalist Ben Peeler, bassist Whynot Jansveld, keyboardist Aaron Embry, drummer Mark Stepro, and guitarist Chris Masterson—moved through the album and the Petty tribute with masterful restraint. The Danforth, which holds about 1,400 people, hosted diehards propped against barriers as Dylan frequently pointed to audience members and placed his hand on his heart in gratitude. The encore closed with The Wallflowers' "Love Is a Country," followed by Petty classics "Refugee" and "The Waiting."
