FIFA volunteers are sharing what it's really like to work the World Cup—and despite expensive ticket prices, volunteering offers unique behind-the-scenes access during the tournament from June 12 to July 2.
Thousands of volunteers will staff events across Toronto and other host cities. Perks include Adidas uniforms, transit passes, and the chance to meet soccer stars and other volunteers. Volunteers play key roles from pre-ceremony flag bearers to welcoming fans and other volunteers at the stadium.
One volunteer, 25-year-old Maritza Mohammed, is using the experience to launch a career in event planning. After submitting an online application in October, she completed training in January and dove into FIFA history.
While volunteering doesn't guarantee free game tickets—FIFA controls ticket pricing and distribution—it's a way to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime event without the price tag. Organizers say the experience offers insight into planning a tournament at the world's highest level.
