Stellantis signs deal to potentially sell idle Brampton plant to armoured vehicle maker Roshel

Stellantis has signed a memorandum of understanding with Roshel, a Canadian armoured vehicle manufacturer based in Brampton, on a potential sale of its idled assembly plant—a facility shuttered since 2023 when the company shifted Jeep Compass production to the U.S.

Stellantis spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin said the company considered multiple options for the facility and believes Roshel "represents a strong path to restoring sustainable operations."

Roshel, which has been operating for about a decade, has made its mark globally. "Roshel produced over 2,500 vehicles for Ukraine alone, which made us the largest armoured vehicle manufacturer in the world," the company's founder and CEO said.

The move comes as Unifor, the union representing Canadian workers at Stellantis, has paused contract negotiations. The union cited an impasse over the future of the Brampton plant as the reason for the pause. Unifor said it is "actively considering next steps" and will provide further details in the days ahead.

The current collective agreement between Stellantis and Unifor is set to expire September 20 at 11:59 p.m. Contract talks began September 1, after Unifor ratified new collective agreements with Ford Motor Co. and General Motors in Canada earlier in the summer as part of its pattern bargaining process with the Detroit Three.
