An 11-storey affordable rental tower is rising at Port Credit in Mississauga, steps from the GO station. Mahogany Management secured a demolition permit in August and construction is now underway on the site at 50 High Street East, replacing a three-storey apartment building.

The project will deliver 96 new rental units, 100 per cent designated as affordable: 60 one-bedrooms, 35 two-bedrooms and one three-bedroom. The design prioritizes transit access with more than 60 bike parking spaces but only five motor vehicle parking spots—a deliberate choice given proximity to the GO station, the adjacent MiWay bus terminal and the future Hurontario LRT.

Mississauga has been pushing for higher-density residences near transit corridors as a means of addressing the housing crisis. Earlier this year, the city approved new laws to make building affordable housing, townhouses and garden suites easier. This project is a direct beneficiary of that policy shift.

The location reflects Ontario's official housing mantra over recent years: building near and on top of train stations. However, that strategy faces a headwind. Metrolinx, the provincial transit authority, has been severely scaling back its plans for frequent all-day GO service. A leaked internal document from March reported by the Trillium stated that GO Transit's expansion plan is "unlikely to materialize," raising questions about whether future residents of Port Credit will have the reliable service the location assumes.
