A male motorcyclist was pronounced dead after a collision with a car at Eglinton Avenue E. and McCowan Road in Scarborough on Sunday, shortly before 6 p.m.

Paramedics transported the motorcyclist to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition. He was pronounced dead a short time later. Police have not yet released the motorcyclist's age or identity pending family notification.

According to Toronto Police Service, the motorcyclist was travelling east on Eglinton Avenue E. when a westbound car attempting a left turn collided with him. The car driver remained at the scene. Inspector Dan Pravica told reporters that investigators could not yet determine what colour the traffic light was at the intersection or whether speed was a factor in the crash.

"Be cognizant of your surroundings. Doesn't matter if you're right or wrong. When a collision happens, it can prove fatal very quickly," Pravica said.

Road closures remain in place: McCowan Road is closed southbound at Trudelle Street and northbound at Landmark Boulevard, while Eglinton Avenue E. is closed westbound at Torrance Road and eastbound at Barbados Boulevard. Pravica said the closures would remain lengthy as the investigation continues. Several Toronto Transit Commission bus routes have been diverted due to the collision.

Toronto Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact them.
