Prime Minister Mark Carney has called six federal byelections for Dec. 7, Elections Canada confirmed Sunday. Two are in Ontario, in Scarborough North and Brantford-Brant South. Three are in Quebec, in Laurier-Sainte-Marie, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie and Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton. The sixth is Yorkton-Melville in Saskatchewan.
Advance voting runs from Nov. 27 to 30.
The Liberals hold 173 of the 343 seats in the House of Commons, enough for a majority even if they lose all six vacant seats. Winning any of the six would give Carney more room on close votes.
In Scarborough North, the seat was vacated by Liberal MP Shaun Chen, who stepped down in August citing health concerns. The Liberals are running James Li, a former Toronto District School Board trustee.
In Brantford-Brant South, Conservative Larry Brock resigned in September to return to work as a Crown prosecutor. The Conservatives appointed former Brantford mayor Kevin Davis. Longtime Conservative Dave Carroll is running as an independent after local nomination tensions. The Liberals are running Joy O'Donnell, president of the Chamber of Commerce Brantford-Brant.
