Dylan Cease will make Toronto Blue Jays history when he takes the mound as the American League starter for the upcoming All-Star Game in Philadelphia.
The 30-year-old pitcher becomes just the fourth Blue Jays player ever to hold that distinction, joining Roy Halladay, David Wells, and Dave Stieb. It's Cease's first All-Star Game appearance after playing in the National League with the San Diego Padres, where he never made an All-Star roster despite success.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider, who will also serve as the AL manager at the All-Star Game, revealed the decision to Cease in front of his teammates before Sunday's game against the Padres.
Cease has been enjoying a strong debut season in Toronto, posting a 2.56 ERA and 148 strikeouts through 17 starts. Three Blue Jays players are heading to the All-Star Game this year — Cease, infielder Ernie Clement, and pitcher Louis Varland. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. declined his invitation to recover from a back injury.
