Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Dylan Cease came agonizingly close to his second career no-hitter on Wednesday, retiring the first 14 San Francisco hitters before allowing just two walks through eight innings.

Heilot Ramos' single to centre to open the ninth inning ended the historic attempt. The Blue Jays led 10-0 at the time, and manager John Schneider replaced Cease with Tyler Rogers to finish the game.

Cease, who entered Wednesday leading the American League in strikeouts, struck out 11 batters through eight innings. He walked Willy Adames with two outs in the fifth and Drew Gilbert leading off the sixth, but otherwise dominated the Giants' lineup.

Centre-fielder Daulton Varsho made a running catch into the wall in the eighth inning to preserve the no-hit bid, robbing Bryce Eldridge of extra-base contact.

Only Dave Stieb holds a no-hitter in Blue Jays history, pitching one in 1990 in Cleveland. Cease accomplished the feat once before as a member of the San Diego Padres in 2024, shutting down the Washington Nationals.

Kazuma Okamoto's opposite-field grand slam off Logan Webb capped a five-run first inning for Toronto, setting the tone for a dominant performance. The victory came after the Blue Jays' 9-3 win Tuesday night, when they retired the final 15 San Francisco hitters.
