A German FIFA fan who went viral documenting his World Cup road trip across North America nearly missed his Toronto match — but made it just in time. FreddyLA7, known online as Freddy, arrived in the U.S. just before World Cup kickoff and began touring between matches, posting funny and enthusiastic reactions to North American stores and food chains that garnered millions of views each. His trip took him through Georgia, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi and beyond, visiting seven different FIFA World Cup matches. The attention led to unexpected opportunities: tours of NASA, a meeting with Houston's mayor, and a visit to the Houston Police Department. His first Canadian World Cup match was scheduled for Saturday, June 20, when Germany faced Côte d'Ivoire in Toronto. But his flight from Dallas was cancelled, and his rebooked flight would have made him miss the game entirely. Freddy pivoted, booking a flight to Buffalo instead and crossing the border just in time to catch the match a few hours into Canada. The move caught the attention of the City of Toronto, which welcomed him online after he posted about finally arriving. The interaction added another chapter to what has become one of the more wholesome World Cup stories circulating online, capturing the friendships, travel mishaps, cultural discoveries and spontaneous moments that make a World Cup unlike any other sporting event. FreddyLA7 is set to travel to Miami Stadium on June 27 for Colombia versus Portugal, and is expected to return to Canada for the Round of 16 Knockout Match at BC Place in Vancouver on July 7.
