Toronto is heading into its first significant heat event of the summer, with a prolonged stretch of hot, humid weather arriving this week.

Temperatures will climb into the low to mid-30s starting Tuesday, June 30, but humidity will make it feel much worse — humidex values could reach the low 40s. The hottest conditions are forecast for Canada Day on Wednesday, July 1, when temperatures are expected to hit around 35°C and feel well into the 40s with humidity factored in.

Environment Canada is urging residents to stay in cool spaces whenever possible during the heat wave and to check in on family, friends, and neighbours who are at higher risk, particularly those living alone.

While the week will be hot, it won't stay completely dry. Periodic chances for showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast throughout the heat wave, including on Canada Day itself, which could briefly interrupt outdoor celebrations.
