Kaleym Davy, 19, killed in Toronto police shooting in Mississauga

Kaleym Davy, 19, was shot and killed by a Toronto police officer in Mississauga on August 6, and his family is demanding answers about what led to his death.

Davy was pronounced dead at the scene near Council Ring Road and The Collegeway. Five unmarked Toronto police vehicles were involved in the incident. According to police, three of those vehicles crashed into a Mercedes that officers had been tracking in connection with a firearms investigation. An officer shot at least once into the vehicle, hitting Davy, who was the driver. Four people were in the car; three passengers were taken into custody and are facing firearm-related charges.

Toronto police allege the suspect tried to flee and struck a plainclothes officer. However, there is no indication of an exchange of gunfire. Two firearms were located in the vicinity of the Mercedes. The Ontario police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, is investigating. Police initially said the vehicle had been stolen, but the SIU later received updated information indicating it was not.

Neither Toronto police nor the SIU have publicly identified Davy by name, though his family confirmed his identity to CBC Toronto. Davy was on his way to graduating and planned to pursue carpentry, according to his aunt Kellise Davy. "He was very athletic, he was very studious. He was very outgoing, creative, innovative. He was such a great cook at such a young age," Kellise said.

Davy's aunts, Kellise and Janelle, protested outside Toronto police headquarters on Saturday. "I find it to be a complete disregard to the family. We want to know why this excessive force, why he was taken down as some type of notorious gang member," Janelle said. "His life was just snuffed out and he wasn't even given a chance."

Toronto police said Toronto it has nothing further to add as the matter is before courts and the SIU is investigating.
